Artist Biography
Benjamin Reddan Artist
Artist Statement
Benjamin Reddan is a passionate designer maker who believes that well made timber products such as cabinet furniture, boxes, and jewellery can have a soul with all aspects of making. Whether it’s a corner block, hinge or piece of inlay, all can be treated with the same respect and care. In 2014 Benjamin completed his studies and apprenticeship in Cabinet and Furniture Making at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. His final assessment piece was the Ikebana cabinet “Awakening of a Dream” for which he received two awards from the Australian Furniture Association. Even though Reddan appreciates his formal training and tertiary study, much of what he has learnt has been through experiential learning in his own time and workspace. His strongest inspiration today is Japanese art and design, specifically the practice of Yosegi : the art form of creating timber patterns from different coloured woods that are thinly sliced. Reddan believes we live too much in a throwaway society. Change can happen through the collection and appreciation of heirloom designed pieces. His pieces reflect this in the techniques he employs whilst creating for longevity in the future. Inherit in his practices is the belief we should all invest in quality through buying a well-made piece only once and treasuring it.Education and Qualifications
