Kay Gibson – Artist – Paintings – Printmaking

Artist Kay Gibson is a painter and print maker working from her studio in Margaret River Western Australia. An interest in the history of the area often leads her to incorporate patterns and symbols surrounding delicate landscapes of rivers and wetlands. Her passion for the local flora and fauna is portrayed in a unique combination of techniques including embossed maps, fumage, gouache, and the use of etched plywood. Kay is an arts educator teaching painting and printmaking at the Margaret River Education Campus. She has held solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions. Her work is held in the City of Bunbury Collection and private collections. Kay took out the 2nd prize in the 2010 Waterhouse natural history Art Prize.

Kay Gibson – Artist’s Profile

Kay Gibson’s paintings mainly deal with the textures, colours and forms of the local flora and fauna close to her home in Margaret River. She gained a passion for the natural environment growing up with parents who loved to travel throughout Western Australia bird watching and bushwalking.

For her latest work depicting indigenous birds of the local area she has referenced books written by her late uncle Glen Storr who was curator of vertebrae at the WA Museum for many years. Kay’s paintings intend to portray some of the unique characteristics of birds and their relationship to the environment.

“My artwork aims to celebrate our native birds and highlight the role of fire in sustaining the biodiversity of south-west forests. As a child I was given an appreciation of nature by my mother who was a keen observer and by my uncle who was Curator of Vertebrates at the WA Museum. I am particularly interested in birds and their habitat and the role of fire in their survival.

For some time now I have been experimenting with my materials to convey the relationship between birds, fire and their habitat. I have been embossing Hahnemuhle paper with native flora and using a fumage method, smoke and burning from a candle, to create the image. The ‘blind’ embossing symbolises the disappearance and regeneration of endemic flora after fire. Through burning and smoking the paper I link the work to the elements.”
