Artist Statement
Objects are part of what we are. Through use and familiarity the other becomes part of us. Fruit and books signify nourishment and abundance. Bowls, jars and jugs suggest daily ritual – a constancy or abidance which is in contrast with the impermanence of the objects themselves – nature most.
The form of the work draws on decorative and architectural devices such as the frieze and the column, and on geometric and spatial devices such as the tier. The idea of balance that is implied in these forms inevitably carries with it the idea of imbalance and chaos. There is a sense of movement implied in the stillness. This dynamic contains the contemplative potential of the work, the suggestion of the kinetic in the static, the metaphysical promise that is present in the very words, still life.
