Harvey has been painting and exhibiting since 1961, when his work was first hung in the Art Gallery of Western Australia. His most recent work is inspired by the colourful sights in the North West landscape and Margaret River in the south-west. The paintings are a combination of simple shapes and pure bold, high key colours that strike out at the viewer. Harvey has been awarded many commissions such as the Diocese of the Kimberley and the Cable Beach Club Broome. His work is represented in both national and international collections.

Colourful paintings about nothing much by Harvey Wachtel In this collection of work Harvey shows us his move towards a greater simplification and spareness, resulting in a wall of colour - noisy, crisp and edgy. The paintings are an inspired combination of simple shapes and pure, bold, high key colours that stand up and strike out at the viewer. Harvey says: "that over the years my art has simplified. Its minimal, it is not pop art but simple art and it is very difficult to be simple" As such, these paintings are literally obvious, and thus present us with the opportunity to simply enjoy them. "I like to make colourful paintings about nothing much - optically disarming and in perpetual variation. Some people like to paint trees. I like to paint houses. I find it more meaningful than painting trees because beauty in architecture is good for our health. I paint to see what something will look like painted.
