Artist's Statement 2008

The Wave Series

THESE PAINTINGS ARE FOR ALL THE SALTWATER SMILES…for anyone who knows how it feels to let the sea wash their maladies away.

When I paint these paintings they take me to a special place in my heart and mind that remembers how it feels to splash, to dive and to arch my back in splendid bliss and surrender to a force I can anticipate but never predict. They are faux impressionistic and deliberately nostalgic.

The sea can be so wild, romantic, meditative, sexy… euphoric...a lyrical mesmerising pulse of the earth.
It's a lot like rock n roll and I love it!

The Buddha Butterfly Series

These are paintings from a parallel universe I sometimes inhabit…where circles of energy travel along pathways , passing, connecting, sharing space before moving on enriched or diminished to their next encounter. Maybe I will change them, maybe reenergize their core, give them more colours, make them appear more attractive, be more or less perfect.

Some have gold in their hearts and will try against all odds to absorb the wisdom of others and cherish their being… but this is a flat abstract universe, where the appearance of life is as simple as I can get it.

They are paintings that require extreme discipline to create and leave me with the feeling that simple colour and line can relate so much…they are painted in acrylic and gold leaf…a bit like funk music and you know I can't help but get down with that!
